about

Young Chicago Authors, the Illinois Coalition for Fair Sentencing of Children, Children and Family Justice Center, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, families, youth activists, and poets join together for a reading of poems by men and women sentenced to die in prison before their 18th birthday.

Poems are read by poets from Louder Than A Bomb: The Chicago Youth Poetry Festival, family members of the incarcerated, other Chicago poets who helped correspond with those on the inside, and Kevin Coval, editor of the chapbook Until I am Free: Voices of Youth Sentenced to Life Without Parole. Featuring Guest Poet Haki Madhubuti

.

103 youth in Illinois have received life without parole sentences. In the United States, over 2,500 youth have received such sentences. Tens of thousands more in the country are serving lengthy terms or terms that effectively equal life without parole. No other country in the world sentences youth to die in prison, a practice prohibited by human rights law.
